Care That Feels Like Family

I believe good care starts with listening. Every treatment begins by understanding what's really going on, so together we can find the approach that's right for you.

Paul Johnson, acupuncturist at Family Acupuncture

Maybe it's an old injury that's flared up again, anxiety that won't quite settle, a pregnancy that's feeling harder than you expected, or a child struggling with something a hug alone can't fix.

Whatever brings you here, my first priority is understanding your story. Every person is different, and so is every treatment. My role is to listen carefully, understand the bigger picture, and work with you to find an approach that fits your body, your life, and your goals.

Supporting people to feel well again—whether they're preparing for a new baby, helping a child thrive, or recovering from injury—is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

What guides my practice

Every person is different, and so is every treatment. Good care starts with listening. From there, treatment is tailored to your body, your stage of life, and what matters most to you.

A career shaped by curiosity

I've spent nearly thirty years working in healthcare, but my path has never been about following a single approach. It's been about finding the approaches that best help the people sitting in front of me.

I first qualified in homeopathy here in Tauranga in 1996 before moving to the UK. While there I became increasingly drawn to Chinese medicine, eventually completing my degree in Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture at the University of Westminster in London.

Returning to Tauranga to practise has felt like coming home, and today I'm grateful to care for people from my own community.

Working together

I practise within the Family Osteopaths clinic, where being part of a multidisciplinary team means care doesn't happen in isolation.

We regularly discuss cases, share ideas, and refer to one another whenever another perspective will benefit a patient. Whether that's your GP, midwife, physiotherapist, osteopath or another healthcare professional, my aim is always to help you receive the care that's most appropriate for you.

Much of my work

Over the years I've undertaken postgraduate training in pregnancy care, paediatrics and musculoskeletal acupuncture. These are areas I've naturally gravitated towards because I enjoy supporting people through some of life's most important transitions: welcoming a new baby, helping children flourish, and seeing someone regain confidence after injury.

While these have become particular areas of focus, the principles behind my care remain the same. I listen carefully, treat thoughtfully, and tailor every treatment to the individual.

Outside the clinic

Outside the clinic you'll usually find me walking on the beach, riding bikes with my family, playing tennis, or watching rugby. Spending time outdoors and staying active keeps me grounded—and reminds me of the same simple things many of my patients are working towards: feeling well enough to enjoy everyday life.

"One of the greatest privileges of this work is not only seeing people feel better, but helping them understand their bodies more deeply and regain confidence in their own health."

That thought has stayed with me throughout my career. My role isn't simply to treat symptoms. It's to help people better understand their bodies, support their natural capacity to heal, and provide thoughtful, individualised care every step of the way.

After nearly thirty years in healthcare, one lesson has remained constant: good care starts with listening.
