Bedwetting Isn't Anyone's Fault — And It's Treatable

Bedwetting is common, treatable, and never anyone's fault. Paediatric acupuncture looks beyond the symptom to support the whole child.

For many families, bedwetting is about far more than wet sheets. It is the washing before work, the interrupted sleep, the cancelled sleepovers, and the quiet worry of watching a child lose confidence over something they cannot control.

Children often feel embarrassed, even though they have done nothing wrong. Parents may wonder whether they have missed something, tried the wrong approach, or whether their child will simply grow out of it. Over time, what begins as a practical problem can affect the whole family's wellbeing.

If this is your family's experience, the first thing I want you to know is this: bedwetting is not your fault, and it is not your child's fault.

Bedwetting, known medically as nocturnal enuresis, is a common part of childhood development. Around one in six children still wet the bed at five years of age, and around one in twenty continue to do so at age ten. Because families often don't talk about it openly, it can feel surprisingly isolating, yet it is something many parents quietly navigate.

The encouraging news is that bedwetting is one of the childhood conditions that often responds well to treatment. With patience and the right support, many children make excellent progress.

The paediatric acupuncturist Rebecca Avern has written about how children's health concerns are often woven into the emotional life of the whole family, and bedwetting is a clear example. A child may become anxious about school camps or staying with friends. Parents may be coping with months or years of interrupted sleep. Siblings can be affected too. Before long, the whole family can find themselves carrying the burden.

This is why paediatric acupuncture begins by looking beyond the symptom itself. Rather than asking only, "How do we stop the bedwetting?", we ask, "What is this child's body telling us?" By understanding the child as a whole—their sleep, digestion, development, energy, emotions, and overall health—we can tailor treatment to support the underlying patterns that may be contributing to the problem.

If bedwetting is affecting your child or your family's sleep, I'd be happy to talk through how paediatric acupuncture might help.
